In the past at Englishpod, our lessons and most everything on the website have always been translated into Chinese.

For basic learners, perhaps this is necessary. But what do you more advanced learners think? Do you need everything translated? I’ve sat down with my team (a mixed bag of teachers, tech people and English learners) to talk about it. Most seemed to agree that all content on the site should be translated into Chinese.

I myself am a firm believer that intermediate learners and advanced learners get more out of linking new vocabulary to other English words they already know - this way when they think of the word, they think of it’s English meaning. Over time the brain forms connections or networks between English words. If you always see or hear translations on the site, you will always think in Chinese, and will constantly be translating word by word or phrase by phrase what you listen to, read, write or speak.

That said, here’s what we’re doing at the moment in the world of Englishpod:
- we will have a glossary on the site ( being built as I write) with direct translations from English to Chinese, phoentics, as well as an English definition
- we will only have a Chinese speaker in the Basic podcasts in order to foster an English-only environment.
- we will translate the vocabulary, phrases and sample sentences for all levels except Advanced
- we will translate the dialogues for the Basic and Elementary levels
- the introduction and summary will be translated for all levels

If you think this is too much or not enough, tell us what you want. We want to provide a learning center where you can maximize your English learning experience. But we don’t want to go too far and make learning English more difficult than it needs to be.

　　当晚，导演冯小刚、章子怡、周迅、吴彦祖盛装亮相《夜宴》剧组举行的晚宴，值得一提的是，著名导演奥利弗·斯通、威尼斯电影节主席马可·穆乐以及好莱坞影星威廉·达福等重量级嘉宾给足了冯小刚面子，放下身边所有事前来赴宴。不过，对戛纳而言，冯小刚这个名字远不如张艺谋、陈凯歌响亮，所以来之前冯小刚就说，《夜宴》的海外销售得靠章子怡。章子怡果然不负所望，成为酒会席间的灵魂人物。

　　众所周知，章子怡的英语口语水平，长期以来都是媒体嘲笑的对象，但这次她不仅代表整个剧组登台致辞，还热情地向国际影人力荐冯小刚，英语相当流畅，算是打了一个漂亮的翻身仗。难怪冯小刚再次强调：“《夜宴》的海外销售就得靠章子怡这张名片，她起到了很多的作用，她本身的演出也非常好。与章子怡合作，她为我们提供了超值服务。”

Find the right level for you! For now you’ll have to try out the levels to see which one best fits you, but in the coming weeks we will develop a testing system to help you find the right level to start out and help you decide when you’re ready to move up to the next challenge.

The new lessons will have more webiste resources. The Basic subscription will continue to have the pdf transcripts, but will include more sample sentences for new vocabulary and phrases. The Premium subcription will have everything the Basic has, plus review exercises, the vocabulary builder and flash cards. We are creating a new, simplified and easy to use dictionary, but it will take time to build.

1906年5月9日是一个平常的日子，可对于美国费城（Philadelphia）的安娜·嘉维斯小姐（Miss Anna Jarvis）来说却是个悲痛欲绝的日子，因为这天，她深爱的母亲永远地离她而去了。在这以后她每天以泪洗面，怀念不已。1907年在母亲去世周年的纪念会上，她希望大家都佩带白色的康乃馨鲜花，纪念她的母亲，并提议每年5月的第二个星期天为母亲节。于是她给许多有影响的人写了无数封信，提出自己的建议。在她的努力下，1908年5月10日，她的家乡费城组织举行了世界上第一次“母亲节”的庆祝活动。随后，美国西雅图长老会带头开展颂扬母爱的活动。美国著名的大文豪马克·吐温（Mark Twain）亲笔写信给安娜·嘉维斯小姐，赞扬她这项伟大的创举——这将在人类历史上产生深远的影响。他表示自己也将带上白色的康乃馨来悼念慈爱的母亲。

经过安娜与大家的不懈努力，美国国会终于在1914年5月7日通过决议：把每年5月的第二个星期日定为全国母亲节，以表示对所有母亲的崇敬和感激；并由威尔逊总统在同年5月9日颁布实行。1914年5月14日在美国举行了全国规模的第一个母亲节。

后来，“母亲节”为全世界人民所接受，在这天，儿女们或干家务，让操劳一生的母亲好好休息一下；或陪母亲外出郊游；或送给母亲礼物……但无论是什么庆祝形式，都少不了美丽的康乃馨花。

　　我们是不是可以就此得出结论：外教的英语水平不如我们国家的高中生。当然不能！语言是为了运用，不是满足于纸面上做做选择题。我们国家好几亿人都在学英语，可有多少人能流利地说英语？又有多少人能做到同声翻译？表面上的“政绩 ”实则是英语学习运用的扭曲和退化。

　　“你们这是考英语吗？”外教的疑问如同《皇帝的新衣》里小孩说出的“皇帝没有穿衣服”。一段时间以来，我们的社会似乎正陷入英语考试的怪圈和误区：学生常常被训练成了只会哑巴英语的考试机器，某些老师以能出偏题怪题难倒学生为荣，企业招聘常常需要英语过级证书，而毕业生以拿不上英语四六级证书为耻。英语考试一年比一年难，这还是考试选才吗？

　　可是，这种情形是怎样形成的？问题似乎出在整个社会的舆论，包括政策的导向——就是英语在我们的社会里成了一种资质。正如北京师范大学比较教育研究所所长项贤明对媒体所说：“哪怕你是研究中国古代文学的，你的外语不过关，对不起，不能当教授。”多可怕的“一刀切”。还有一个事实也值得重视，据报道，英语过级的压力正使得部分学生没有足够的时间学习专业知识。

　　规定人们必须学英语，谁该为变了味的英语教学和考试担责？

　　今天，外教考英语不及格似乎扇了考试体制的一个耳光，但愿某些人会有所触动。
